sacred space series – self-love altars

Do you find you really care for yourself? That you truly know and understand what it is you need? I thought I did, but once my depression took over, the last thing I was doing was caring for myself, which ironically made me depressed.

Before now, I simply didn’t have the energy to invest in myself properly. I was busy with work, holding space for family and friends, and simply hiding in my apartment to recover from everything, before starting the vicious cycle all over again.

Although I still have hard days, where getting in the shower and laying on the mat feels difficult, I find it always replenishes my soul, even when I don’t want to do it.

If you’re reading this, I imagine you’re like me, or once were, where the idea of taking the time to look yourself in the mirror and feel good about yourself, is the last thing on your to-do list. But as the saying goes, “when you look good, you feel good.” And I believe the opposite is also true. When you feel good, you look good.

This is why I created multiple self-love altars. Here in these spaces, I allow myself the time to relax and rejuvenate for however long I need, or however long I have. I’ve included pictures to help inspire some of these creations into your own sacred space, as well as tips and benefits of their existences.

self-love altar

This is my first and favorite self-love altar. It is in this mirror that I speak the most affirmations to myself. It is in this mirror that I get dressed and put on makeup. Everything on this self-love altar is something to add to my beauty. It is not a necessity, but a luxury, that I often find time to participate in, simply because, I love myself.

A fun tip is if you’re into tarot or oracle cards to display them on your altar to remind you of what you are trying to embody. I pulled these cards at the beginning of the month and decided to honor their messages. If you’re curious, the 9 of pents (the card on the right) represents an independent woman who is full of abundance. She is pre-empress energy. And the blue moon says, “believe in the impossible.” This card reminds me of Whitney Houston’s song from Cinderella. Both of them felt very synchronistic for me.

If tarot isn’t your thing, you should definitely buy yourself some flowers! My favorites are roses, but I like to mix it up once in a while, depending on what color I’m attracted to, or what vibe I’m feeling. Trader Joe’s has the best selection, some as cheap as $5. You are definitely worth it. Don’t forget to stop and smell them every day!

If you don’t have the space for above your dresser or near a mirror, think of your bathroom as your self-love altar. After all, this is where you cleanse your energy and feel most refreshed. Here are some of my favorite products and ways to care for myself.

self-love vanity

In between applying these products, I close the vanity and speak affirmations to myself in the mirror. This is multitasking at its finest. While you may think you don’t have time to look yourself in the mirror and do this, realize you already are, while you’re brushing your teeth or combing through your hair. I like to say them even as I’m putting on lotion, doing my makeup or getting dressed.

If you don’t know what to say, try any of the following that I repeat every day:

  • I am a powerful being of light
  • I shine light everywhere I go
  • I am beautiful
  • I am kind
  • I am strong
  • I am wise
  • I am compassionate
  • I am a leader
  • I am a compassionate leader
  • I am a queen
  • I am Daenerys
  • I am new
  • I am enough

Something as simple as speaking these words out loud to yourself can be hard, especially on a day when you are feeling down and not believing in yourself. There have been numerous times where saying these simple phrases has made me cry. Here are a few more powerful ones that have helped me when I needed more than the affirmations I created.

  • I am safe, at all times.
  • I am protected, by my ancestors.
  • I am grounded, by Mother Earth.
  • And I am guided, by my higher self.
  • And so it is, Ashé! (Amen)

On behalf of the collective, (everyone reading this post) I also decided to pull from my self-care Oracle deck. Even after months of affirmations and self-love altars, there were still days where I was unsure what I truly needed to help me feel better. Therefore, I would recommend this deck to anyone and everyone, as it is most helpful, and less confusing and scary as tarot can sometimes feel. Here is the spread I pulled for everyone to care for themselves on a deeper level.

self-love oracle spread

Connecting with Earth doesn’t always have to mean going outside, although it’s good if you can and do. As I mentioned before, stop and smell your flowers! I water my plants and repeat that affirmation about being grounded by Mother Earth. I also play on my yoga mat, my final self-love altar.

I also don’t have a bath, but that doesn’t stop me from sitting in the shower until the water turns cold. Sometimes you need to allow yourself to fully relax, with no rush to get in and get out. Cleaning your space may also make you feel more like Cinderella, than a queen, but I promise it will also make you feel better. You can’t have a clear mind or clear energy when you’re surrounded by clutter and dirt. Turn on some music and dance while you’re at it!

Drinking tea is my favorite. I like creating blends, using more than one tea bag per cup. It’s soothing for the throat and comforting for the soul. Yogi tea has some of the best blends with some of the cutest inspirational quotes.

Planning a vacation doesn’t necessarily mean take a vacation. I understand there’s a virus and financial crises at play here. If you notice the woman on the card has her eyes closed and her third eye activated above the airplane. Pinterest is my favorite way to “plan” a vacation, without necessarily taking it. Or simply take a day trip somewhere not too far. I think we all just need to get out a bit more!

Last but not least, write a gratitude list. Giving gratitude attracts abundance. Sometimes, I just say what I’m grateful for, also out loud. When I am feeling depressed, this can feel like the most forced thing in the world, but it always shifts my perspective and helps me realize how truly blessed I am.

I hope this resonates, as well as inspired you to create your own self-love altars. I’d love to see what you come up with! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I hope you remember to love yourself every day.
